In sitting back to think what Havana´s Malecón was built for, we see that it was a mere containment wall in the face of the rough sea that would, very frequently, penetrate the city. This 8 km long wall stretching out along the northern coast of the Cuban capital and built in various stages between 1901 and 1952, is the busiest place in Cuba.
To arrive in Havana and miss walking by or seating on the Malecón is almost a sacrilege. It is probably the place where something is always happening and never ceases to brim with activities. It is so that it was popularly named as El sofá de La Habana (Havana´s couch.) And whoever named it so… was damn right!
In some way or another, we all end up at the Malecón, even those who do not know it. Why is it that this wall is so adorable, mystic, and filled with yearning? I do not know. I think that everyone has one small personal history in some space of that place.
