This is a lovely city perched on southern central Cuba, closely tied up to the sea due to its proximity to the Jagua Bay, boasting great fishing tradition and significant industrial and cultural development. It features good hotels and some interesting beaches, like Rancho Luna. It’s pretty near the Escambray Sierra, a ridge that belongs to the Guamuhaya mountains and harbors one of Cuba’s most spectacular natural scenes.

Accesos / Access La vía terrestre es la opción por excelencia. Tiene buenas carreteras para conectarla con La Habana, Santa Clara y Trinidad; y además un aeropuerto y buena marina, cerca del hotel Jagua, en Punta Gorda. Ground transportation is the option of choice. The city sports good roads that connect it to Havana, Santa Clara and Trinidad. An airport and a good marina, near the Jagua Hotel in Punta Gorda, are also available.

Población / Population El cienfueguero es educado, orgulloso y jovial, buen guía para el forastero y amable anfitrión. El Parque Martí, el Bulevar, el Paseo del Prado y el Malecón, pueden dar una buena idea a los visitantes de que este es un pueblo de vocación hospitalaria, formada desde los lejanos tiempos en que la bahía era punto de encuentro con viajeros llegados de cualquier lugar del mundo. The local population is educated and jaunty, a good guide for visitors and a kindhearted host. The Marti Park, the Boulevard, the Paseo del Prado and the Malecon paint a pretty good picture of this town’s hospitable vocation forged in the long-gone times in which the bay was the meeting ground for travelers coming from any part of the world.

Idioma / Language Español, aunque en los principales centros turísticos es común encontrarse personas que hablan idiomas extranjeros: inglés, francés, italiano y alemán. Spanish, though staffs in all major tourist centers speak such languages as English, French, Italian and German.

Cuando ir / When to go Dado el buen clima habitual y no estar expuesta la ciudad –por su ubicación al sur–, a los vientos invernales del norte, que sí se hacen sentir entre enero y febrero sobre la costa septentrional de la Isla, cualquier época del año es buena para ir a Cienfuegos. El mar apacible permitirá disfrutar de playas tranquilas todo el año y, además, bucear, para lo que éste es un sitio muy recomendable, empezando por Guajimico, centro especializado en la modalidad. Given the traditionally good weather and the fact that the city’s southern location keeps it away from the winter winds that blow through the island’s north coast in January and February, any season is a good time to visit Cienfuegos. A calm sea will let you enjoy quiet beaches all year round, let alone practice scuba diving for which this is highly recommendable spot, beginning with Guajimico, a location equipped with a specialized center for this water sport.

Qué hacer / What to do Cienfuegos es excelente para mezclar a la vez algo de turismo urbano y cultural por lo hermoso de la ciudad, su arquitectura, espacios y museos; con el disfrute de amenidades vinculadas al mar y los deportes náuticos; y asimismo, darse un baño de naturaleza tropical en las cercanas montañas del Escambray, que tiene parajes espectaculares y sitios únicos como el salto de agua El Nicho. The beauty of Cienfuegos makes it an excellent place to blend urban and cultural tourism. Its architecture, public places and museums, coupled with the enjoyment of sea-related activities and water sports, can’t be passed up. Nothing compares to the tropical nature of the nearby mountains of Escambray, boasting some breathtaking locations and one-and-only spots, like El Nicho waterfalls.

Gastronomía / Cuisine La paella tiene una especie de gran referente nacional en un tradicional restaurante de Punta Gorda, pero hay que decir que ésta es una ciudad en la que no es difícil encontrar buenos lugares donde comer platos marineros a base de pescados frescos y mariscos. Paella is a plate of undisputed reference nationwide and at the Punta Gorda traditional bistro is the name of the game. However, it’s not hard to find good restaurants and eateries in town, especially if it’s seafood and the catch of the day what you’re actually looking for.

Sugerencias en las afueras / Outskirts Tips Fortaleza de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Jagua / Fortress of Our Lady of the Angels of Jagua Obra del ingeniero José Tantete, desde su construcción concluida en 1745, fue la tercera de mayor importancia en el país, y la única de sus dimensiones y características en toda la región central de la Isla. Ubicada hacia al sur, en la ribera derecha del canal de entrada a la bahía, a ella puede llegarse bien por la carretera que atraviesa la Laguna de Guanaroca. As a construction designed by engineer Jose Tantete, the building of this fortress concluded in 1745 and it was at that time the largest in the country and the only one of its kind with such features in all of central Cuba. Overlooking the south, on the right bank at the entrance of the bay, visitors can drive their way up there down the road that runs through the Guanaroca Pond.

Jardín Botánico / Botanical Garden Abierto en 1900, tiene 92 hectáreas en las que están representados los cinco continentes, a través de más de dos mil especies de plantas, con predominio de árboles maderables, cactus y plantas de interés para la salud humana. Los expertos lo consideran uno de los mejores del mundo y, de manera muy particular, su gran colección de palmíferas que alcanza las 307 especies. Es Monumento Nacional. Opened in 1900, it has 227 acres which over 2,000 species that stand for the five continents. Hardwoods, cactuses and other interesting plants with healing powers are among the major standouts here. Experts believe this is one of the best in the world for a number of reasons, including a collection of palm trees that peaks 307 species. It’s a National Monument.

Muy recomendable en la ciudad / Must-Sees El Café Palatino / Palatino Café Una hermosa terraza donde sentarse a reponer energías y que está al lado de la galería Maroya, perteneciente al Fondo de Bienes Culturales, con obras de arte y fina artesanía. This is a beautiful terrace where visitors sit down for a break. It’s next to the Maroya Gallery, run by the Cultural Assets Fund, where artworks and handicrafts are exposed.

Catedral de la Purísima Concepción Cathedral of the Pure Conception Tiene unos preciosos interiores en los que relucen los 12 Apóstoles en vitrales franceses colocados simétricamente encima de cada capilla a lo alto de la nave, además de dos vitrales de Cristo que coronan el altar traído de Barcelona. It features amazing interiors with the twelve Apostles splayed in French window panes symmetrically laid out atop each and every chapel in the nave, not to mention two window panes depicting Jesus Christ that crown the altar brought from Barcelona. Palacio Ferrer / Ferrer Palace Sobresaliente edificación en el Centro Histórico, con cúpula enchapada de mosaicos. Hoy es la Casa Provincial de la Cultura, con programación diaria. It’s an outstanding building in the historic center, crowned by a mosaic-plated dome. Today it houses the Provincial House of Culture with daily programming. Cementerio Tomás Acea / Tomas Acea Cemetery Concebido a modo de gran jardín, con calles interiores que van y vienen flanqueadas por árboles maderables y frutales. El carácter monumental del clásico edificio de la administración, lo destaca protagónicamente sobre la suave colina en que está emplazado. Es Monumento Nacional. It was designed as a huge garden with interior lanes that come and go, flanked by hardwood and fruit trees. The monumental character of this classic administration building is highlighted by its location atop a smooth knoll. It’s now a National Monument.

Punta Gorda Un bonito paseo a la vista del mar que lleva hasta un famoso restaurante de paellas y el Palacio de Valle. This makes for a nice ride along the sea that takes visitors to a famous restaurant of paellas and the Valle Palace.
