Although they want to show it a symbol of backwardness, the conuco is one of the most significant tools of cultural resistance of the Venezuelan people. This is the opinion of Carlos Tovar, director of the Territorial Coordinating Ministry of People's Power for Culture. He has led the activities surrounding the development of this tradition throughout the national territory.
According to Carlos Tovar, cities have been designed to make humans mere consumers. By implementing the conuco practice we can help to achieve a society based on justice, equality and tolerance. A society that recognizes the diversity, the multi-ethnicity and the multiculturalism we have.Conuco is an indigenous heritage and is an asset of cultural interest, Tovar said. It's like a school that transfers knowledge onto the geneations and is tightly related to food sovereignty.
"We feel that within the conuco and the ancestral wisdom our farmers have, there are extraordinary contributions that can strengthen the spirituality of the people," said Carlos Tovar.
