- One shakes in Ecuador.
Sometimes the earth shakes like dogs shake. But the fleas deserve so and great friends should not be having such a hard time.
The day we met Byron, I was singing with Charly in Atacames. He was listening while eating and after the regular "will you contribute with some money?", he came to ask how much we charged for a presentation. He saved our numbers and his call surprised us a few weeks later. By then, I was in Quito and Charly in Pedernales. I flew (so to speak) to pick up my friend to go to Esmeralda, where Byron was waiting for us, but I had to make the trip alone, because the virtuous guitarist was quite busy.
The trip was made in two stages: first to San José de Chamanga, and then to Esmeralda. I traveled 50 km from the first part, but on arrival saw that the last bus was leaving. I reached him, but could not afford it, so I was stuck in Chamanga with my morality on the ground ... I saw an open bar and went in. Then the magic happened: like a dream the public sang with me. Their hard hands clapped tremendously filling my heart with joy and courage. These fishermen gave me what little they had and what I most needed: illusion to follow.
There were still 130 kilometers and just over hours to get to the appointment. It was 8 p.m. and I was on the route of Espondylus. Dark green around, closed humidity and occasional flickering saw me go by. How much peace and fear so far from me!
I walked slowly, passed some cars and suddenly Amaro Robles stopped the van. I ran with the backpack and guitar on my shoulder and jumped in. Amaro invited me to enter the cockpit and told me he was a lawyer. I felt he was a great guy and I told him that I was also a doctor, but the quack.
He took me straight to my destination and I arrived on time. Amazing! Byron greeted me with a big hug and I said goodbye to Amaro with another: Mission accomplished! There, I learned how Ecuatorians make you tremble with joy, for they do not know of the “unknown", and offer their selfless friendship.
