In 1961, there was a great cultural revolution in our country. Just before it, Fidel had addressed intellectuals and artists in the country on the topic of Cuban culture. It is when the old cinema Rodi, which since its opening in 1952 had been very elitist, became Teatro Mella.
The Mella Theatre has been characterized as a theater of great cultural activity. Mella Theatre has an angel ... it is the showcase of the street Línea, and everyone has the good habit of looking at the marquee to see the announcement of the main show of the week.
It has a geographical location that helps a lot, but it is of no use if there is not a sustained quality program, which is primarily why we have a public that is faithful to us. Artists also are very loyal to us.
If we were to talk about the shows during these fifty-five years of the Teatro Mella, I cannot fail to mention Vida by the Litz Alfonso Company. Vida marked a before and an after in this institution. It was a whole month with a packed theater. There are still people who beg for the show to take place again.
We must also remember that it was in this theater that the National Festival of Humor Aquelarre emerged. For the first time comedians from all over the country gathered to compete and fraternize. The true celebration of the witches was and continues to take place here in the Mella Theatre.
Not to mention the International Ballet Festival of Havana. Here, we have welcomed all prestigious foreign companies that have come to Havana. Many names like Carlos Acosta and Carreño have also stepped up to the stage in this theatre. When none dreamed that Cuba and the United States would restore relations, we showed an American tap company that is still remembered. The balconies were full; the firefighters threatened us with a fine. It was tremendous.
There is always something that fails to be mentioned, but I can add the Shakespeare Company from England, best foreign show of the year in 2014; what an acting; the dance companies from India and China ... there are so many milestones that mark the history of the Mella Theatre ...
