In the collective imagination of Sur del Lago, sailing in piragua (canoes) and vapors is one of the most recurring symbolic references. In the late 19th Century and in the first six decades of the 20th Century, the piragua (canoes) became a mean of transporting cargo and passengers. On the one hand it was effective and on the other it was extremely attractive for trade. The name piragua comes from the ancient times of the Caribes, who appointed thereby the hollow trunk that plunged into the water as a boat. With this canoe-like boat these intrepid sailors approached the Dutch colonies and West Indies.
A wooden house with relatives and belongings plying the waters is La Merideña that now speaks of the past and moves slowly in the green waters and closed raft in the waters of the pipe Concha. Currently, La Merideña becomes an exceptional ecotourism school.
The shipwrights who still exist in San Francisco and La Canada must not disappear. The important thing is to continue preserving the values that are rooted into our collective memory.
