Lat Am-Bound Flights on the Rise
Air France-KLM Group’s 2011 summertime schedule around the world is showing a 5.7 percent increase in MPS (miles per seats), compared to the same season in 2010. Latin America is posting a staggering 13.5 percent uptick.
Based on the same line of wintertime schedule, Air France keeps two daily flights to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. For its part, KLM is ratcheting up its Sao Paolo route by replacing the old Boeing 777-200 for 777-300 aircraft. The Panama connection will also ramp up to half a dozen weekly flights, thus further strengthening its cooperation with Copa Airlines. Beginning June 21, Air France will launch the inaugural Paris-Lima route with five weekly flights –except on Mondays and Wednesdays- on Boeing 777-200 aircraft. In addition to the daily flight from Amsterdam, Air France-KLM will deliver a dozen weekly flights between Europe and Lima. KLM Returns to Buenos Aires Following a 10-year hiatus, KLM will kick off regular flights between Amsterdam and Buenos Aires beginning Oct. 31, 2011, a move that will make the Argentine capital the air company’s 67th intercontinental destination. “With Buenos Aires as a KLM’s seventh destination in Latin America, we’re beefing up our position in this fast-growing region,” said KLM President Peter Hartman. “Latin America plays a key role in Air France-KLM’s vast flight network,” he went on to say. The new nonstop route to the Ezeiza Airport in Buenos Aires will count on three weekly flights during the upcoming winter season, while a fourth weekly flight will be added by March 2012. Air France’s New Paris-Cancun Route Beginning Oct. 21, 2011, Air France will operate three weekly flights between Paris and Mexico’s Cancun, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays aboard 472-seat Boeing 777-300 aircraft. This route will be part of the 17 weekly flights that Air France and Aeromexico –a member of the SkyTeam alliance- operate between Paris and Mexico. Ten of these flights will be operated by Air France and the remaining seven will be flown by Aeromexico. Moreover, KLM also has seven weekly flights from Amsterdam. “The Cancun opening lays bare Air France-KLM’s willingness to hold on to its development strategy in Mexico and Latin America by giving passengers nearly 30 weekly flights from Paris or Amsterdam toward Mexico,” said Patrick Roux, the company’s general director for Latin America. Nonstop Flight to Havana KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will operate three weekly flights to the Cuban capital on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Havana is now becoming KLM’s 68th intercontinental destination. “This exceptional destination is highly popular among Dutch and European passengers alike who can now fly to the Caribbean island in just one day and making a brief stopover in Amsterdam,” said Mr. Hartman. New Route to the Dominican Republic Also on Oct. 31, KLM will open up a new twice-weekly route to the Punta Cana airport in the Dominican Republic, scheduled for the new 2011 wintertime program. This will be KLM’s 69th intercontinental destination. “Following the expansion of our Caribbean capacities toward Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, and on the heels of the new Havana-bound flight, I’m pleased to announce that Punta Cana will be part of the KLM network in the summer of 2011,” Mr. Hartman concluded.
