Research, Production and Efficient Implementation of Working Strategy

While boasting a longstanding experience in the field of veterinary medicine, for years LABIOFAM has also successfully worked in the development of drugs and products beneficial to human health.

“We experienced a biological war which had a negative impact in our economy. Such precedent drove us to live under a constant state of alert, and at present nearly 50% of our research projects are linked to that field. Out of our multiple projects, 15 are biological, 17 pharmaceutical, six are related to natural products and five to chemical products; all of them have material backup so that the new product can be added to the center’s production line once the research is finished.”

This is how Jose Antonio Fraga Castro explains the context in which LABIOFAM emerged and developed, and its current work. “After more than 10 years of study in which we succeeded in isolating five low molecular weight peptides, we are close to multiplying, at a large-scale, a homeopathic product whose active principle is the venom of Cuban scorpion Rhopalurus junceus.”

“Vidatox®–he says– improves the life quality of cancer patients who show an immediate response to the treatment; and it has been proved to enhance the action of cell growth suppressants used in conventional therapies for this type of condition. We are interested in meeting the high demand of this biological preparation in Cuba and abroad; for this reason we are working in formulas to obtain a natural product, in a third recombinant phase and by means of chemical synthesis.”

A scientific event that set the way The center’s decade-long hard and fruitful work won the important recognition of the first LABIOFAM Congress 2010 which, to Dr. Fraga Castro, meant “an exceptional moment to see how important our work was, how much we had grown and how we should act in the future” based on the current circumstances. After the meeting, new deals have been signed, new markets have been opened, and LABIOFAM’s international projects have expanded. The Bactivec® and Griselesf® biologic larvicides, as well as the biological rodenticide Biorat® are used in anti vector control programs implemented in different regions of the world with the help of Cuban specialists from this institution. «Following an intense work, Luanda, capital of Angola, has seen a significant decrease of the incidence of malaria, and mosquito plagues in the city has been remarkably reduced by this project,” the scientist said, while announcing that there has been an increase in the production volumes of those products in Cuba and several African countries where five manufacturing plants are being assembled.
