Being a grandson of Bebo’s, Chucho and Maria Caridad’s nephew, and the child of Miriam´s, most certainly few would have forgiven Cucurucho Valdés had he drifted away from the path of those meant to leave their mark on the culture of this island. So, when Roberto Carlos, the little kid who amazed everyone with his musicality, was ready to learn from everything around him, he was enrolled at Guillermo Tomas School.
«My mother, Miriam, the light that has guided and still guides me, not only was the first who put my hands over the piano keys, but also encouraged me to keep a permanent interest on studying, bettering myself, by flooding me with melodies. “Listen to this”, she used to say, and captivated me with my grandfather´s band, Sabor de Cuba, and his arrangements for Benny Moré and Nat King Cole... It was almost impossible for me not to choose this profession».
Jazz aroused his curiosity at prestigious Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán, and thanks to it he made his first international tour in Munich, with outstanding singer Mireya Escalante. It was in Germany where he was offered a scholarship to pursue his musical education in greater depth for a year. Hardly three months after his return, he became a member of Charanga Habanera (1998). Later, he would join other bands such as Charanga Forever, Pachito Alonso, Pablo FG, Issac Delgado, until he was summoned by maestro Juan Formell to make history with Van Van for 15 years.
Sometime later, he decided to take his own path and recorded the CD-DVD for Ni antes ni despues, which had six nominations for Cubadisco fair and the prize for instrumental music. Now EGREM has invited him again along with Sony Music, and Cucurucho has delivered Con los pies sobre mi tierra. «to my modest opinion, I think it will be an album. In the last three years we have been successful, perhaps too fast. I tell you, I am a little scared», he states.
