Sergio -El Checo- Pérez

El Sr. Antonio Pérez Garibay –padre y representante de Sergio “El Checo” Pérez- visitó Cuba y, gentilmente, concedió una entrevista a Excelencias del Motor. Amable, sonriente y muy mexicano el Sr. Pérez nos atendió por más de una hora, y nos contó el más preciado secreto en el éxito del “Checo”.

ExM: Sergio Pérez es un piloto establecido en la Formula Uno actual.  ¿Cómo han logrado llegar tan lejos, dónde radica la fortaleza?
AP: Bueno, existe la opinión de que automovilismo es un deporte solo para millonarios.  Lleva mucho dinero y si no, no se desarrolla.  Nuestro caso, es totalmente lo opuesto.  Te estoy hablando del caso de los Pérez. Empezamos a puro corazón.  El talento, fue supliendo las carencias. Corríamos en las calles, en León, en Monterey, a puro polvo y eso te da la habilidad, porque el piloto se tiene que meter en los tiempos.

ExM: Sergio ha declarado que pueden ser terceros este año. Fueron cuartos el pasado año, ¿cómo lo hacen, siendo Force India “la cenicienta” de los Grandes?
AP: “Checo” comenzó con seis años el Karting.  Eran carros muy pobres, no teníamos gomas, usábamos las que otros desechaban, y así cada cosa.  Siempre ha sabido lidiar con estrecheces.
Aprendió a rodar al límite, a encontrar el “feeling” del neumático y los exprime al límite. Eso son centésimas, segundos, puntos de clasificación y hasta podios. Ese es el camino del “Checo”.

ExM: ¿Algo que lo defina?
AP: Lo pueden citar, es una frase muy suya, que pocas veces comento, algo fuerte, pero es la máxima de su vida: “En esta vida te tienes que chi..., si quieres de algo de verdad, te tienes que chi…y apretar el pecho”. Dormíamos en los coches, no podíamos pagar hotel.  Si esas carencias son un sufrimiento: retírate, eso no es lo tuyo. Entonces; el amor, la pasión, la entrega absoluta al deporte, lo definen, lo hacen diferente.

ExM: Hace años entrevistamos al Sr.Nikki Lauda y era optimista sobre el automovilismo en Cuba ¿Qué aprecia usted del automovilismo en Cuba?
AP: Pues que existe un enorme potencial.  Que los esfuerzos deben encaminarse hacia el Karting, que es el semillero. De allí salió el “Checo”. Por eso tenemos esperanzas en el nuevo proyecto de Sergio con el lanzamiento de sus carros de Karting, enfocados hacia Latinoamérica, donde están los talentos naturales, los carros Sergio Pérez. Por eso venimos a decirles: nosotros estamos listos, ustedes tienen la palabra.

ExM: ¿Qué tal Cuba?
AP: Pues increíble. Bella, cálida, fantástica. Existe un talento que desborda por todas las esferas.  Dónde vayas, encuentras soluciones extraordinarias, ingeniosas. Desde los “almendrones”, hasta las restauraciones de las viviendas. El mundo cambia con gente así, con gente loca y ese es el espíritu que formó al “Checo”. El futuro de Cuba es grande, pero más grande es su gente.

Kind, smiling and very Mexican, Mr. Perez gave us over an hour of his time and unveiled the most precious secret related to the success achieved by “Checo”.

ExM: Sergio Perez is a well-ranked Formula 1 driver. How has he made this far? Where does his strength come from?
Antonio Perez: Well, some people believe that motor racing is a millionaire-only sport. It actually takes a lot of money or you cannot develop your team.
Our case is completely different. I’m talking about the Perez’s. We only had our heart in the very beginning. Talent filled the empty spaces.
We used to race in the streets of Leon, Monterey, there was dust everywhere and that gives you skills, since the driver has to be focused on the shifts.

ExM: Sergio has said that you could finish third this year. You were in the fourth position last year. How can you do that, since Force India is kind of “the Cinderella” in the Majors?
AP: “Checo” began driving Karting at the age of six. Those were poor karts, we didn’t have tires so we had to use those thrown away by other people.
He has always been able of dealing with low resources.
He learned to drive to the limit, find the tire’s “feeling” and make the most of it. That can be translated into hundredths, seconds, qualifying points and even podiums. That’s the way of “Checo”.

ExM: Is there anything that defines him?
AP: You can quote him, since this phrase has been coined by “Checo”, it is harsh, but it is the maxim of his life: “In this life you have to f*** yourself, if you truly want something, you have to f*** yourself… and press your chest.”
We used to sleep in cars, because we couldn’t pay for hotel rooms. If that lack of resources makes you suffer, just back off, this is not your thing. So, he is defined by love, passion, absolute devotion to the sport; that’s what makes him different from the rest.

ExM: We interviewed Mr. Nikki Lauda years ago and he was an enthusiast of motor racing in Cuba. What do you think about motor racing in Cuba?
AP: I believe there is great potential. The efforts must be focused on Karting, which is the breeding ground. That’s the origin of “Checo”. That is the reason why our hopes go with Sergio’s new project, with the launch of his Karts, focused on Latin America, where you can find natural talents. We are here to tell you: we are ready, you have the floor.

ExM: How about Cuba?
AP: It’s incredible. Gorgeous, warm, fantastic. There is talent everywhere. Wherever you go, you find extraordinary and clever solutions. From “almendrones” to house restorations. The world is changed by people like this, crazy people and that’s the spirit behind “Checo”. The future of Cuba is big, but its people is bigger.
