Cuba is known for a rich cultural heritage that lures as many tourists as its beaches, climate and people. Many visitors unravel this charm as they traipse down a somewhat
deep island where folklore and rhythms ooze out spontaneously.
Others come up with mosaic of Cuban-ness in colorful shows presented by the Ministry of Tourism’s Artistic Show Agency (Turarte).
Founded in 1959, this agency is responsible for the production and marketing of musicals and dance shows in and out of Cuba, as well as the provision of costumes, scenography and props for each and every performance.
With artistic units perfectly adaptable to a variety of scenes and formats, Turarte is also in charge of some of the most emblematic shows of Havana’s nightlife, such as the show at the Tropicana Cabaret, the mystical Paradise under the Stars.
However, the outreach of its mission is far more embracing as the agency deals with the artistic production in nightclubs, especially in hotels. For that purpose, its portfolio boasts musicians for different shows, choreographers, dancers, artistic directors and a vast knowhow enhanced by over half a century of hard work. Furthermore, the agency runs a fabric workshop that guarantees costumes that make its shows not only visually
beautiful, but also genuinely Cuban.
The company’s long list of achievements is recognized worldwide. Its artistic proposals have entertained those attending conventions in Cuba’s major travel destinations and have made a big splash in European casinos. Its members have also been hired to perform aboard cruise liners and in extra-class hotels in other Caribbean destinations, such as the Bahamas.
Boldface names like Baudilio Castellanos, Felipe Morgan, Migladys Sánchez or Jesús Balmaseda are mainstays in this agency. Their work helped shape Turarte as it is now, an institution devoted to entertaining and fostering the values of Cuban culture, an ever-evolving heritage that’s strongly positioned in an increasingly competitive environment.
