- What a god of bronze can do.
Ernest Hemingway was a novelist that had a novelistic life in Cuba. Everyone remembers the episode of hunting Nazi submarines aboard the Pilar. This story would give a good argument for a stunning TV series.
It is said that Hemingway used to invite friends to his home in Finca Vigía. Then, he would invite them to take their shoes off and plunged them into the pool where Ava Gardner bathed naked.
The author of The Old Man and the Sea, a novel written precisely on that farm, made a confession of the love he felt for Cuba: «I love this country and I feel at home; and where a man feels at home, apart from the birthplace, that is the site where he is intended to be».
Therefore his time in Cuba and the type of relationship he established with the island was a premonition. If there is a star that shines in the emerging relations between Cuba and the United States, its constellation is Finca Vigía. This is a haven of nature and culture in which Hemingway wrote some of his most notable works, and where he created a special affection and respect for the island.
It is already a sign that before departing for the United States, on his first visit to Cuba, US Secretary of State John Kerry, sought to feel the magnetism of the cordiality in Finca Vigia. This wonderful place is visited by eighty-thousand curious every year.
The next edition of the international symposium Ernest Hemingway will celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the foundation of the Museum Hemingway Finca Vigía, the first devoted to the novelist’s work in the world.
