José Luis Cortés, «El Tosco», is one of the virtuous of the flute in Cuba. Trained at the National School of Arts in Havana, he drew on the teachings of Juan Formell and Chucho Valdes. In 1988 he founded the orchestra Next Generation (NG) La Banda, whose repertoire enriched with arrangements for metals, combined with piano and percussion. Cortes created a new sound: the Cuban Timba, mixing rock, jazz and funk, with elements of son, rumba, guaracha and mambo. This new genre, internationally recognized, revolutionized the dancing music in the late twentieth century. For that reason, his way of making music is currently being studied at art institutions in the country and abroad.
Cortés has over 40 musical productions and, along with NG La Banda, has performed in more than 55 countries. This has not only made the people dance, but has also taken a highly professional work in instrumental music and jazz to those places.
After founding the Camerata Cortés an ensemble of flutes, the only one of its kind in the country, the University of the Arts of Cuba (ISA) awarded a diploma for artistic merit,
Today José Luis Cortés holds concerts every Wednesday and Friday, starting at 11 pm, in the Casas de la Musica in Havana and Miramar, in the Cuban capital.
