- Cuban «Tablao» of Cristina Hoyos.
She once said that flamenco has always accompanied her. Together, they came to this island for the first time in 1975. Since then, Cristina Hoyos and Cuba have loved each other. Here the dancer sees «art around in the streets, in homes, in the environment, in the people,» while Cubans applaud with Caribbean prodigality one of those stars that comes to stage only on very special occasions. When she walks among us, she remembers her childhood and gets constantly excited.
Cristina Hoyos, Cuba and flamenco lived with great excitement when the Spanish artist became the first celebrity to be awarded the International Prize «Josefina Mendez». An acknowledgment intended for the most outstanding personalities of the dancing world.
At that time, Hoyos remembered Josefina «We were united by many things. We both have played similar roles: Carmen, in The House of Bernarda Alba… We both loved dancing and dancing fully returned love to us, giving us a fulfilled life.»
Specialists do not get tired of writing it: Cristina Hoyos has the finest arms of Spanish dance, which is saying a lot. Being a young girl she would come home from school… and dance! Any music was good. At the age of 16 she turned into a professional dancer; from that moment on flamenco possessed the dancer.
One day, Antonio Gades saw her and invited her immediately. Thereafter a link that lasted twenty years began. «As if I had won the lottery» Cristina described her experience with the «essential master».
She worked with Gades in three films by Carlos Saura. But it was with her own company, Ballet Flamenco of Andalucía, that Hoyos moved the world, thanks to shows like Yerma, Gypsy Ballads and Travel to South. Cristina wants people to recognize flamenco although she is not in it.
