THE LARGEST ISLAND OF THE CARIBBEAN IS INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED FOR ITS TOP-OF-THE-LINE PUBLIC HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. IN 2017, CUBA WILL BE THE VENUE OF SIGNIFICANT EVENTS. EXCELENCIAS MAGAZINE TALKED EXCLUSIVELY WITH DR.ILEANA DEL ROSARIO MORALES, NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION WITHCUBA’S PUBLIC HEALTH MINISTRY

Cuba recently hosted the Regional Meeting against Zika and other Airborne Viruses, as well as the Bilateral Meeting with U.S. professionals. What’s the importance of these meetings?
It was an all-time success. The Regional Meeting was held in October, preceded by the Cuba-U.S.Bilateral Meeting that took place at the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute. We assessed the possibilities to develop joint efforts in the fields of research, training and formation of human resources.
The meeting was attended by highly-qualified scientists from Cuba and the United States who talked about viruses generated by arthropods that trigger such diseases as dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and others.
Later we conducted the Regional Meeting with the presence of Health Ministers from the region, experts from the Pan-American Health Organization and countries that have experience in dealing with Zika, dengue, Chikungunya and yellow fever. A joint response was agreed to face these epidemics. We decided what to do in international health control, the vaccines to be introduced and how to follow the protocols. We established a guideline. On the other hand, Cuba shared its experience in the anti-vectorial battle, since we’re strong in that sense. We have an inter-sectorial planthat involves every single entity in the country as fostered by the government.
Our policy is aimed at increasing the number of scientific events. So, boldface names from around the world come together to give lectures, sign agreements and establish international collaboration plans.

2017 is going to be an intense year in terms of events. What are the main congress and conferences on the schedule?
There are several events and the most important aspect is the fact that they are association congresses. I’d like to highlight, for instance, the Medical Emergencies and Intensive Medicine Congress, which targets the training of personnel in this area with internationally standardized courses. As for the Hematology Congress, Cuba and the world will show their breakthroughs related toregenerative medicine, stem cells, new products of the Cuban biotechnological industry and other topics. We have the International Congress on Social Work, an area focused on aging, handicaps and risk diseases.
The Nursing Congressis another important event, since it’s the biggest association we have in Cuba, with over 100 thousand members.
PSICOSALUD 2017 will be assessing matters related to endocrinology, diabetes and obesity, the international launch of Heberprot P and primary health attention.
During NEUROCUBA, experts from the United States, Latin America and Europeare going to talk about dementia and neurologic disorders.
Community Genetics is another significant congress, linked to the mother-children program and the odds to decrease malformations. The Rehabilitation Congress will include aspects related to thermal waters, disability and neurologic rehabilitation.
As a common denominator, the societies review their activities, analyze the way they work and give honorific titles.

Cuba will be also hosting other events related to medical services. What are they?
They are scientific events, but linked to the Comercializadora de Servicios Médicos Cubanos company. The schedule includes Esthetics and Health, thermal waters, natural medicine and a big event on regenerative medicine. Other events will be focused on Neurosurgery and Antidrug Villas.

The utmost announcement next year will no doubt be the call for the 2018 “Salud para Todos”Convention and Fair. Once again, the island nation will be the world capital of health. How important is this event?
The 2018 Health for Everybody Convention and Fair is slated to be held on April 16-20 at Havana Convention Center and Pabexpo. That’s the top event on Cuban public healthcare. It’s the official event of Cuba’s Public Health Ministry. We want it to gather events related to public health, epidemiology, medical education, workers’ health, chronical diseases and prevention. This is the perfect space to sign deals, collaboration agreements and carry out specialized visits to hospitals and institutions.
After that, in line with the fair, we promote and market our products and services. It’s a unique opportunity to share views and do business. During that week, there is no other event on earth that gathers more professionals andofficials from health organizations, health ministries and institutions. It’s a space to learn and teach, where the verybest representatives come together. It turns Cuba into the world capital of health.
