Out of the sting of the Rhopalurus junceus –Cuban scorpion- a medication for the complete cure of all malign tumors could be produced. Under thorough research for over a decade, the natural compound has scientifically proven its anti-tumor, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Born under the shroud of tradition, marked by empiricism and not always accepted or taken into account by science, studies on scorpion poison began in Guantanamo, a province of eastern Cuba. Convinced of the healing powers of the substance produced by the Rhopalurus junceus, biologist Misael Bordier led a team that experimentally started providing ill people with a biological preparation whose active agent was no other than the poison. The significance of those analyses conducted by Bordier prompted a Cuban institution to draw a scientific bead on it that eventually helped bear out what can be construed today as a milestone in the treatment of cancer-related diseases. A dozen years after taking on the study, the LABIOFAM Entrepreneurial Group came up to the scientific community –within the framework of its First International Congress held in Havana, Cuba– with partial outcomes that confirm a number of pharmaceutical properties that bear watching in terms of cancer treatments. According to LABIOFAM experts, the assessments of the natural compound led to the isolation and labeling of five active low-molecular-weight principles that can actually inhibit the growth of tumoral cells and eventually induce cellular death. Biologic Science Master Alexis Diaz Garcia, a member of the multidisciplinary team, says that «these active principles of low molecular weight interact with a number of protein structures whereby they exert their own actions. These components control nervous impulse, metabolism and cellular proliferation, let alone the fact that the inhibition of their activity triggers a cascading effect that leads to the neutralization of cellular proliferation, migration, metastasis and pain.» Over 10,000 patients diagnosed with different tumoral diseases, and who didn’t respond positively to conventional treatments, have been treated by experts from the LABIOFAM Entrepreneurial Group. Patients suffering from tumors in pancreas, the marrowbone, prostate and lungs, among others, have considerably improved their lives thanks to the use of scorpion’s venom. Knocking down the barriers of uncertainty in the face of novel things is one of the goals that drive this research team. Perseverance and a vital scientific validation will help them fulfill this dream.
