- Santiago de Cuba dresses up in jazz.
Santiago de Cuba reaffirms itself as an excellent place for jazz followers. To the dissimilar musical chords that reign in this city, jazz musicians were also added to share the headquarters of the International Festival Jazz Plaza.
Alberto Lezcay Castellano, a graduate of the National School of Art, assures us that in tune with the current genre boom, extending for the first time the venue to his hometown was something rewarding, a recognition for the new instrumentalists that stand out in these times.
In addition to trumpet player and keyboard player, Lescay - director of the Albertico Lezcay & Formas project - possesses the gift of a good communicator. His project, he says, of Santiago origin, was invited to the 32 edition of the Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza, held this year between 15th and 18th December.
Remember that it was the outstanding instrumentalist Roberto Fonseca who promoted the idea of extending the Jazz Plaza Festival to the east of the country. He was in Santiago not only as a musician and to present his new album, but also as artistic director of the event.
“Jazz,“ Lescay says, “has become a universal musical genre over time, each country welcomes it by fusing it with elements of its own culture. It has been demonstrated that the new generations of musicians are making undeniable contributions to our national culture”.
Proud of his music, Lescay considers it important "that the young Cuban jazz musicians have been able to participate and share stages in Santiago de Cuba with the American Arturo O'Farrill and the band Fatoumata Diawara, who were joined by all the jazz musicians of the patio”.
The first edition of the Jazz Plaza in Santiago de Cuba had intense days of exchange favoring talks, feel, and enjoy the rhythm of jazz. It was an opportunity to remind the audience that this genre, which was born as a search for freedom, permanent state of creation and consequent mixture of styles, remains in Cuba a constant source of creativity.
