Cieric has turned 25 years old. An organization created to promote cultural endeavor, empower and agglutinate communities in the preservation of the most authentic of Cuba. Important artists representing the vanguard of the Cuban plastic arts have made a unique exhibition that has as a support the fan to celebrate this important date.
The fan was historically carried to refresh the pharaohs and their palace courts, in ancient Egypt and was used on a large scale. Then he passed to Persia, Babylon and Rome. In China, it was designed on a human scale, for pocket and hand. Little by little these elegant elements were taking their place among royalties, religious orders and then spread through multiple dynasties, societies and castes to survive with grace and sympathy until our days.
It was associated with power: the more exclusive it became, the more successful the owner would be; at first it worked equally to women and men. They have been made with a high variety of materials and techniques. It has incorporated feathers, rods, nacre, pearls, ivory, woods and precious metals.
It arrived in Cuba from Spain, and it dominated our dance halls at the end of the 18th Century. Soon it acquired acceptance by the population. The wealthy Cuban ladies always preferred them to be decorated by the most renowned painters at the moment. And it is what has happened now with this exhibition, which has been conceived with fans that carry the designs and backgrounds in the Collection of the Museum of Colonial Art.
