On the eve of the fifth centennial of the foundation of Santiago de Cuba in 2015, the city’s administration, the Santiago de Cuba Fifth Centennial Commission, the Office of the City Curator and the Excelencias Group have joined hands with other institutions to come up with a number of events aimed at celebrating the seventh village founded on the island nation by conquistador Diego Velazquez on July 25, 1515.

The Center for Underwater Natural and Cultural Heritage Management in Santiago de Cuba and the Excelencias Group are summoning for the a symposium on Underwater Activities for the Preservation of Underwater Natural and Cultural Heritage, and the International Colloquium entitled “Santiago 1898: A Critical Moment in 500 Years of History”.
SIMPOSUB 2015 will take place in Santiago de Cuba, with the Salón de los Vitrales of the city’s Revolution Square as the main venue (slated for July 1-4, 2015), as well as in the sunken vessels that belonged to Admiral Cervera’s fleet during the 1898 naval battle.
SIMPOSUB 2015 and the “Santiago 1898: A Critical Moment in 500 Years of History” International Colloquium will gather historians, professors, students and enthusiasts interested in this topic, mainly scuba divers from around the world, to talk about the Hispanic-Cuban-American War and its meaningfulness as crucial chapter in the history of this Cuban village and modern mankind.
