Following its grand opening on Feb. 24, 1999 during the Habano Festival, sooner than what many have anticipated this place captured the attention of many European and American customers for its comfort, special location in Havana’s historic center and its being a place of excellence for the lovers of the world’s best premium cigars.

The year 2010 will bring along a big step forward for this hotel whose nine guestrooms and lobby will be outfitted with new conveniences aimed at lifting its exceptional conditions one more notch up. This lodging is housed in an 18th-century mansion that was clawed back from its ruins by the Havana Historian’s Office and the Habaguanex S.A. company, the latter in charge of a kind of leisure related to both history and culture, operating in the old core of the nation’s capital and running a number of inns full of peculiar charms. The Conde de Villanueva (Count of Villanueva) –a.k.a. the Habano Hostel– boasts well-lit and spacious colonial-style rooms spruced up with sculptures and pictures of famous cigar smokers, stained glasses, lush foliage and a distinguished ambience. Each room and service area is named after a part of the island nation known for its tobacco plantations, like the Vuelta Abajo restaurant that dishes out the finest Cuban cuisine from the 19th century and today for some 30 patrons. All are equipped with colonial-style furniture made of cedar and mahogany –Cuban precious wood–, plus air-conditioning, phone, safes, cable TV and other conveniences. Since this is a hostel cut out for cigar smokers, the establishment has a well-stocked habano store properly equipped with lockers for stashing cigars, walk-in humidors and tasters’ bar, one of the most appreciated value-added additions for customers who go there in search of the world’s finest premium cigars.
