Almost Four Out of 10 Drivers Wrongly Overtake Cyclists on the Road
A study carried out by assessing 2 900 passing maneuvers between motor vehicles and bicycles on conventional roads showed that in 36 percent of the cases the safety distance wasn’t respected, referring to the WW1.5 m between the left edge of the bicycle’s handlebar and the car’s right mirror.
The experiment was conducted by the Road Engineering Research Group (GIIC is the Spanish acronym) from the Technical University of Valencia. Besides the lateral separation, the frequent traffic of trucks and high speed has a bearing on the risk in this maneuver. Cycling is frequently practiced on weekends, with a high number of participants. The maneuvers were "perfectly caught" by recording devices, which helped researchers measure the side distance during the passing.
