The exhibition that the Palacio de Gaviria presents to us is the first retrospective devoted to the figure of Tamara de Lempicka in Madrid, and the second in Spain. It is designed to contextualize Lempicka´s artistic career through the decorative objects that accompany her paintings: furniture, screens, vases, centerpieces, haute couture costumes, photographs and vintage recordings.
The curator, Gioia Mori, dedicated a decade to the study of the life and work of Tamara de Lempicka. That is why this exhibition reflects very well the character of the woman behind the paintings.
The exhibition brings together more than two hundred pieces of art deco, from forty sources among private collections, museums and providers. All artifacts, except those in the fashion section, are creations of participants of the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, which are seminal and key to this movement.
Lempicka, as a pioneer in the development of déco, focused on geometric motifs, using bright colors and creating resounding shapes. The exhibition takes a tour through ten sections of her artistic evolution.
