- Mayra Navarro: the story of a life to be told
An encounter with the Cuban artist Mayra Navarro is always an interesting experience. Her human qualities and personal magnetism, and a life dedicated to the performing arts and pedagogy, confirm this.
Her start in the world of oral narration in 1962 is linked to the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library,) where she met the prominent Cuban writer Eliseo Diego, who had a lot of responsibility in her talent for the art of oral narration.
In countries such as Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Argentina she has successfully presented her artistic shows, as well as workshops, seminars and master classes for prestigious exhibitions, festivals, universities and cultural institutions.
She is the founder and director of the Estudio NarrArte since 1995, the coordinator of the International Storytelling Network, the director of the Foro de Narración Oral (Oral Narration Forum) of the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, and since 2006 of the Primavera de Cuentos International Festival.
This exceptional artist graduated from the Instituto Superior Pedagógico (Higher Pedagogical Institute) in 1969, holds a Master's Degree in Education for Art, she is a Professor at the Higher Institute of Art and the author of numerous books. Her criticisms, reviews and articles have been published in Cuba and abroad.
At 70 years of age, 55 of them dedicated to art, her enthusiasm for scenic oral narrative preserves the freshness of the first years. For those who frequent the institutions of culture, the opportunity to enjoy a relevant personality in the pedagogy and artistic practice of stage oral narration in Cuba is reserved. There, this beautiful Cuban, with her peculiar smile and exclusive talent for the stage, often tells wonderful stories of love for life.
