I did not study music. I just perfected my technique as a singer with the help of my teacher Amelia, whom I thank very much. Although I recognize that my ability to compose is innate, sometimes I feel ashamed to reveal myself as an arranger because people discriminate against self-taught individuals and question the authenticity of their compositions. I feel the music, the mambos, the tumbaos, the basses ... all by ear. I hum melodies to my musicians and while I'm telling them how to harmonize them, they write in the staff and then perform them. That way, I have more than one hundred and fifty songs of my own.
Since I was a child, I had this passion for music; I loved to sing, but my mother, a graduate in Physics and Chemistry, wanted me to graduate in science. To please her, I started studying Geography in college and then became a meteorologist. However, the success I achieved in the TV game show Super 12, where I performed by singing ballads as a duet (Destino Elegido) with Orlando Quevedo (Pipey), led me to quit the career in the first year. We won all the prizes, including that of popularity, and we won the votes of great Cuban musicians such as José Luis Cortés, Giraldo Piloto and Moisés Valle (Yumurí).
I have devotion for Benny Moré, Polo Montañez and Barbarito Diez. I am way far from their stature, but at the same time I feel very close to their works, because I try to enrich my music with their influences: well thought-out lyrics, loaded with feeling and adapted to the new times that allow me to interact with the audience, without losing the essence of Cuban music. That is why my repertoire is permeated with genres such as son, bolero, even danzón, and in it the traditional and the contemporary come together in harmony.
Our dancing music, whether it is called salsa or son, enjoys international fame. However, we have moved away lately from it with the quality downgrading of their lyrics. With this project we intend to rescue them and show that we can break the barriers imposed by the new times, return to the son and contemporize the most genuine of our roots to deliver them to young Cubans and the public in general. Hence we are preparing a tour around universities throughout the country that will end at Havana University.
