On 18 February 1838 the Gran Theater of Havana was inaugurated, a theater also know as Tacon Theater in honour of the Cuban governor at the time. Soon, thanks to the lavishness of its auditorium and the renowned artists performing therein, its fame transcended the boundaries of the island to join the international theater circuit. In its history, it has been identified by other names: National Grand Theater, Estrada Palma Theater or García Lorca Theater.
It is the Great Theater of Havana, a monument of memory in contemporaneity. Many prestigious celebrities, ballet, opera and dance companies have performed on its stage. Examples of this are the dancers Fanny Elssler, Anna Pavlova or Ana Maria di Angelo; actresses  such as Sara Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse; singers Enrico Caruso, Victoria de los Angeles or Teresa Berganza; pianist Arthur Rubinstein or French mime Marcel Marceau.
Since 1960 it has been the main stage of the International Ballet Festival of Havana, a summit meeting that under the convener power of prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso brings the best of the ballet world to the Cuban public.
The careful and elegant restoration carried out in the building has brought back the magnificence of its main hall García Lorca or the acoustics of the concert hall Ernesto Lecuona.
The Great Theater of Havana Alicia Alonso, with the rehabilitation of their old classrooms, amplifies its goods and services. It offers locations for conventions and exhibition centers, formal receptions, social events or any other happening that promotes its sustainability and positioning as a unique institution in our cultural context.
The most important Cuban theater awaits the visitor, friendly in the beauty of its architecture and from the rich artistic potential it treasures. Situated in a context of exalted social, cultural and historical significance, it is an absolute reservoir of a mixture between tradition, contemporaneity and memory.
