Escaleras al cielo. El rock en Holguín (Ediciones La Luz, 2017) by Holguín researchers Raúl Cardona and Zenovio Hernández, provides new visions for the studies on one of the less researched genres of this kind: Cuban-made rock, in this case the one made in Holguín as an agglutinating platform of renowned events and festivals.
After the emergence of the first bands and the initial lack of understanding, rock in Holguín started to be less seen as a stigma, especially when the Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS: Saiz Bros. Association) «took the members of those bands into its bosom. Ever since, these bands organize clubs, concerts and festivals in the premises of this organization ».
With Irela Casaña’s edition, and an attractive design and front pages by Frank Alejandro Cuesta from a photo by Lino Valcárcel, Escaleras al cielo… works as a detailed monographic study that prompts questions and multiple approaches on the matter, since it compiles valuable information that, processed and seen in its entirety, would have been almost impossible to obtain otherwise. This is one of its best and main achievements: to gather several decades of history and passion for rock in a province characterized by its artistic diversity and the extent and quality of its exponents.
