The Zapata Peninsula is situated in Matanzas province. It is the largest wetland of the insular Caribbean and 70% is a biosphere reserve. At present this area has the mission of fostering this modality of tourism, knowing that this contributes to the defense of the environment and of the national identity. The flora in this area is fairly abundant, ranging from wood varieties to wide areas of mangroves, forests and natural thick vegetation.

Several sites have their own special attraction in the area: La Boca, with its spectacular breeding of crocodiles, the Laguna del Tesoro (Treasure Lagoon), a place fit for catching trout and where the manatees can be found, a water mammal almost in extinction. Guamá with its singular Taino village, a sort of tropical Venice; the beaches of Playa Larga and Playa Girón, emblematic historical places and Salinas de Brito, where two routes of migratory birds converge.

This is the largest Natural Park of Cuba; several exotic species co-inhabit the same site like the manjuarí, a fossil living fish; the ferminia and the gallinuela de Santo Tomás-endemic birds of the area-crocodiles, deers, macabíes and other species.

For the traveler, a tour along the Zapata Peninsula is an encounter with history, legend and the most splendid nature.
