There’s mariachi, rock, African-music bands or the Papantla Flyers Show, a spectacle that combines Aztec ritual music with dances and a jaw-dropping descent.Vallarta locals usually observe red-letter days with huge concerts staged by world-class acts from the turf and overseas. These acts usually perform at the Aquiles Serdan outdoor theater (Los Arcos) and near El Caballito, the symbol of Puerto Vallarta. In order to take a closer look at Vallarta’s musical scene, we’ve picked the most representative genres in a bid to highlight the places that people know best for providing an excellent music ambience.

ROCK: For those who love rock music, there’s no better place in town than the Hard Rock Café,a spot that feels the passion of rock,or maybe turn back the clock a tad and swing by Viejo Vallarta, where hot rock concerts are dime a dozen. Both locations are right across the Malecon driveway.Playa de los Muertos also boasts a very special place, the Ritmos Beach Café,featuring rock performers and a great array of live music acts.

JAZZ: Those who love the smooth sound of jazz will be dazzled by the atmosphere provided by la Isla del Rio Cuale, where the River Café and Le Bistro restaurants are two spots marked by a perfect fusion of music, nature, people and god food.

LATIN: If you’re looking for a Cuban ambience, then head for La Bodeguita del Medio, named alter Cuba’s traditional bar, that features live music from this Caribbean island nation, plus mojitos and a planeload of fun.But in case you need something more sophisticated, with great gourmet food and Latin beats,I suggest you the Bianco Restaurant & Lounge.

ELECTRONIC: Most disco clubs in Vallarta have hired superb deejays. One of my favorite ones is Mr.Frogs,a guy with a flair to mix live rock, games and electronic music. Many lounge-style places have popped up lately in town.Grace and Citrus are two good cases in point.

INSTRUMENTAL: Many restaurants and hotels play back instrumental music to create a laidback and romantic ambience.Get carried away with those magic notes of acoustic instruments. Two great spots are the oceanfront La Palapa and the Café des Artistes.

URBAN:You’ll surely chance upon African rhythms in the streets, fusions of different genres, outdoor concerts.Three places you can’t afford to pass up are the Malecon, the Isla del Rio Cuale and Playa de los Muertos, homes of most of the town’s musical events.

TRADITIONAL:The so-called bailes and charreadas are all the rage among locals. There are generally three to four bandstand groups, sometimes accompanied by breathtaking and dangerous bull-riding shows.Even though it’s not mandatory, attendants usually wear boots, flapped blue jeans and cowboy hats.
