In San Luis de Otavalo, a little over a hundred kilometers north of Quito, Ecuador, is located the largest artisan market in Latin America.
Every Saturday, the streets of this city in the Andean highlands of the province of Imbabura are filled with stalls with colorful textiles, handicrafts in clay, paint, wood, costume jewelery, goldsmith's, saddlery, marzipan, pottery and more. It is also a unique opportunity to taste local foods and listen to music from this region located in the middle of a valley where the Imbabura volcano is located.
The Plaza de los Ponchos, also known as Mercado Centenario (Centennial Market,) is the heart of the fair and is open every day.
Otavalo, visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world, has been declared «Capital intercultural de Ecuador» (Intercultural Capital of Ecuador.)
