Puerto Vallarta Today
Puerto Vallarta has managed to preserve the charm and traditions of a traditional Mexican small town, yet it has also adapted itself to the necessary progress and changes that have made it one of the hottest travel destinations of both Mexico and the world. Over the last couple of years, a number of projects –some of them very important for the projection of Puerto Vallarta or aimed at luring specialized market niches like cultural tourism or business travel- have been carried out. In 2007, the Puerto Vallarta Great Alliance and the Historic Center Rescue Program were implemented in a bid to join the efforts of the municipal, state and federal authorities under a unified investment of some 90 million pesos. On May 31, the first stage was completed within the framework of anniversary foundation of Puerto Vallarta when Municipal President Javier Bravo Carbajal flipped on the lighting switch of the Guadalupe Church, the Arms Square and Los Arcos. As many as a dozen blocks have been restored, including fresh coats of paints on the house facades, new ironworks, roof tiles, lamp poles, urban furniture, new benches, concealment of gas tanks, the installation of new air-conditioning equipment and the refurbishment of the facility. And the hard work goes on, with new projects underway on the second stage guidelines and the façade cleaning of establishments along the Malecon (seawall). Another major project that has seen the light of day this year is the International Convention Center that will allow Puerto Vallarta to reel in business travelers to a place that didn’t count on proper facilities until now. We can’t forget about Puerto Vallarta’s cultural and festive character as it will be home this year to such major events as the May Celebrations, the Gourmet Festival, the Second Firedog Castle Contest, the Fishing Tournament, the Golf Tournament, and so on. And for the first time ever this year, the 11th International Fireworks Symposium will take place. In addition to these outstanding tourism-oriented projects, Puerto Vallarta has improved and made significant headway in a number of social fields to let both locals and visitors get the most of a travel destination that has combined modernity and traditions, yet it clings to its reputation as a safe, beautiful place that gives the warmth and the hearts of its residents.
