THIS PRESTIGIOUS BRAND SPECIALIZED IN TORPEDOES BROKE IN WITH THE LAUNCH OF HABANOS, FOLLOWING COHIBA’S FIRST ROLLOUT IN 1982

In the course of its short and lofty history, Habanos has stood out for its character, excellence, quality and unmistaken hallmark, features that put the company on the pinnacle of the premium cigar realm. For that reason, each and every one of the 27 brands within the portfolio of the world’s most respected tobacco company boasts tremendous acclaim in the international market. An exquisite blend, taste, scent, style or format turn puffing on a habano into a nearly unmatchable pleasure that can be enjoyed today anywhere and at any time.
Yet there’s one format whose high complexity in terms of manufacturing brings up the very best of cigar rollers, and whose subtle finish makes every aficionado and expert crave. The double torpedo is an emblem of Habanos, especially of the Cuaba brand.
Cuaba is the first habano brand born in the 1990s and its name stems from the burning torch Taino aboriginals used –it’s still used by some Cuban peasants– to light up their nights. The brand is specialized in the rolling of double torpedoes that were highly popular before 1959.
As a brand, Cuaba was launched on November 19, 1996, at the historic Claridge’s Hotel in London by Francisco Linares (President de Habanos S.A. at the time), thus getting its big break in the launch scene after Cohiba had done so for the first time in 1982.
Initially, each cigar had a slightly different format because there was no mold to roll them evenly. Half a year into its debut, the factory started using special casts for each of the four sizes, a reason why now all cigars share the same shape. The original unmolded cigars have now become collectable items.
Although in the beginning Cuaba was only available in the United Kingdom, exports of the brand started to spread out around the whole wide world just a year after its birth. Today, this is a highly-demanded, well-positioned cigar, an ineludible benchmark in England and in a good chunk of the globe.

Features of the Cuaba Cigars

The Cuaba habano brand was first rolled at the Briones Montoto Cigar Factory (formerly Romeo y Julieta), and from the very beginning its taste was labeled as mild to strong. All Cuba habanos sport a peculiar shape called “double torpedo”.
This brand recreates a habano style dating back to the 19th century when double torpedoes were all the rage.
A century later, in 1996, this traditional style was resumed at the Romeo y Julieta factory. Due to the complexity of their making, the double torpedo is the pinnacle of the cigar-rolling art.
At the onset, Cuba used to offer relatively small vitolas. Since 2003, three large-size vitolas were added: Distinguido, Salomón and Diadema.
All the Cuba vitolas are completely rolled by hand with long filler hailing from the Vuelta Abajo region in Pinar del Rio.
