Romeo y Julieta Gran Reserva Wide Churchills 2009 has been made with leaves that endured a long and thorough aging process for five years, hailing from the Vuelta Abajo, a region with Protected Denomination of Origin

The 17th Habano Festival is the setting of choice for the presentation of the Romeo y Julieta Gran Reserva (Romeo y Julieta Grand Reserve), in its well-known Wide Churchills vitola, which has panned out to be a token for this brand since its introduction five years ago, during the 12th Habano Festival.
For making this Gran Reserva, all the leaves in this habano (filler, binder and wrapper) have gone through a long and thorough five-year aging process. This is a one-and-only, exclusive production of 5 000 numbered boxes that stands out for the brand’s utmost excellence, a creation that will no doubt have a tremendous acclaim among enthusiasts of habano cigars.
This new Gran Reserva greatly underscores the unique character of Habanos as a Protected Denomination of Origin. In the making process of this Romeo y Julieta Gran Reserva, the finest tobacco leaves harvested in 2009 in Vuelta Abajo, from Pinar del Rio* (D.O.P.), Cuba, were handpicked.
Wide Churchills, with its special sizes –unique in the Habanos’ regular vitola portfolio– is especially attractive for those smokers who crave thick ring-gauge habanos with well-balanced and scented blends.
These habanos have been completely hand-rolled with long filler, featuring leaves selected by expert blenders and checked by over 50 seasoned tasters during joint tasting sessions organized by the Tobacco Institute. Those expert tasters included members of the National Tasting Commission from Cuba’s most prestigious cigar factories, plus specialists from the Cuban tobacco industry and Habanos S.A.
The origin of the brand name –it dates back to 1875– is well known. I stems from the homonymous literary tragedy penned by English writer William Shakespeare. The brand quickly reaped acclaim worldwide in the early 20th century, thus becoming one of the first ever to sport distinctive cigar bands.
Winston Churchill was one of the most devoted smokers of this brand. Since his 1946 Havana visit, his name was not only used in the habano bands, but it also gave birth to the brand’s best-known vitola: Churchills of Romeo y Julieta.
In the 21st century, two vitolas were added. Firstly, Short Churchills got its big break in 2006 –the missing Robusto within the brand’s vitola portfolio; and secondly the Wide Churchills in 2010, the one having its Gran Reserva now. This vitola brought along the 55 ring gauge and became the harbinger of that trendsetter.
Its well-balanced and aromatic blend, with filler and binder leaves picked from the Vuelta Abajo region, make Romeo y Julieta the classic mild-tasting habano.
