Each year, the Habano Festival’s tradeshow comes along with a significant number of paintings linked to both the history and tradition of Cuban tobacco. This time around, the Habano Gallery gathers 17 works by 14 artists, most of them with vast and prolific careers under their belts, who have been grabbing national and international accolades since the 1970s, like Ever Fonseca, Nelson Dominguez, Flora Fong, Zaida del Rio, among others.
Under the title “The Color of the Glass You Look Through”, this year’s Habano Gallery reels in other artists from the 1980s, such as Ernesto Garcia Peña, Ileana Mulet, Juan Jose Blanco Lozano and others. The artwork of just another newcomer, young artist Fernando Reina Escalona, a graduate of the Higher Institute of Arts (ISA) who’s currently working on a project for the upcoming Havana Biennial, consists of an intervention in a cigar factory. The pieces –similar to the ones Escalona presented at the 12th edition of the Habano Festival- are recreations of olden and out-of-use brandings, viewed here as a pretext to splay on them the personalities the painter has been inspired by.
Artists from different generations and with different styles –their art has been closely related to the realm of habanos- come together in the 2015 Gallery.
