- Palacio de la Salsa. The era of Cuban timba
It marks the end of one era and the beginning of another. The Copa Room cabaret at the Hotel Riviera was the center of this momentous change in national culture and musical life in general. One of the emblematic places of Havana nights began to die as a legend was born: the Palacio de la Salsa, and with it the «era of the Cuban timba».
It was the nineties, perhaps the most convulsive years of Cuban life in the second half of the twentieth century. José Manuel García, in his capacity as compiler of this musical selection, took risks and faced the nation's musical scrutiny.
Contradictions, controversies, misunderstandings and so on came out of the nights and experiences of those seven years when the «Palacio…» opened its doors, as it was called by nationals and visitors. This is the first sonorous testimony of one of the most amazing moments of the musical and social history of Cuba.
The nineties are part of our collective memory. Many in Cuba still continue to live them. Without its memory they cannot understand the musical present and future. Then, music…come to us!
