"Why music? I had never been asked that question. It is difficult and easy to answer. I joined it before being born, since my mother graduated in piano while pregnant with me. My father played guitar and sang in trios. We are talking about an almost genetic link.
"It was a process that won me. Gradually the music got intome, it possessed me. The more I knew, the more I wanted to learn from other areas such as orchestration and composition; hence I drifted to orchestra director. All caught my attention. Since then, music has had me completely at its mercy. "
Teacher, composer, orchestra director, father, musician, states the desire to create something new is gaining more space in his life because it is the response to an irrepressible inner need.
The classical and popular, the humility and the excellence, the joy and the rigor inhabit his personality.
"It's all about accessories –says the artist, graduate in orchestral conducting at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, 1973. Since I became interested in composition, I realized that it is integration where all makes sense.
Discipline, talent, virtue, commitment, dedication, are some of the words that might be mentioned when discussing the work of Guido López-Gavilán, who also serves as head of the Department of Direction  at the Higher Institute of Art, and as president of the Musicians Association of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). The merits he has accumulated during his long and successful career led him to be awarded the National Music Prize in 2015.
"I do not think I have conquered it all. I do not think I've reached the top. I'm always looking for a little more. As long as I am able, I will go for more. It's like the idea of ​​the place where you go and never arrive.
"For me the prize is the result of a life that is becoming long and has been devoted, with all sincerity and honesty, to achieve the best possible results, to provide a culture that will serve our people and enrich our environment ".
