- Chess: a game with art.
Chess is sports, science, and art. If anyone had any doubts, you just have to take a visual walk through the Tableros de Ajedrez exhibition, an initiative to spur the massive practice of this discipline in Cuba, especially among children and youth.
The unique thing about this proposal is that chess as sport use its finest arts to defeat, destroy or remove the contrary, here are its function is to attract and make people fall in love.
That is the sensitivity, the feeling that transpires in pieces donated by seventeenrenowned fine artists of the island such as Alicia de la Campa, Jorge Guanche, Iskra Ravelo, Gabriel Cuétara de la Campa, Jose Antonio Oliva Alfonso, Zaida del Rio or Irving Torres, just to name a few.
Released to the public in the Mella theater during the last edition of the Premios Excelencias Cuba 2015 and later shown at the Habana Libre Tryp hotel, Sinecio Cuétara,Milton Bernal, Alberto Sautua, Landy Mesis Alvarez, Enrique Wong Diaz, Adrian Cuba Valdes, Guillermo Zaldivar Rodriguez, Reynaldo Lazaro Alvarez Villamil, Hector Ricardo Montaner Naranjo and Ricardo Labarca Lebrigio also they participated in the exhibition.
The artistic brotherhood, aimed at further prestige the so-called Mozart of Chess, Jose Raul Capablanca, had as stimulating force the Group Excelencias and its president, Jose Carlos de Santiago, main defender of the socio cultural project Tableros de Ajedrez. Also FANCLUB Capablanca, founded in 2015 and driven by Francisco Martinez, an official of the Embassy of Spain on the island. Similar enthusiasm expressed Spain's ambassador in Cuba, Juan Francisco Montalban Carrasco, who at the opening of the sample in the Havana Libre hotel stressed the importance of culture, art, sport and science to enhance the friendship between the two nations.
Zaida del Rio Castro (Las Villas, 1954). Cartoonist, writer, painter, muralist, poet and decorator of ceramics and textiles. Trained at the National School of Art, at the Higher Institute of Art and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Se has exhibited around the world: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, United States, Spain, Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, Martinique, Cuba ... She has won several awards and recognitions.
Alicia de la Campa Pak (Havana, 1966). She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro, 1985. She also holds a Degree in Art Education at the Pedagogical Institute Enrique José Varona, 1990. Member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), her work includes drawing, painting and illustration. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. Part of her work is in collections in the United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, South Korea, Japan, Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, Mexico, Chile, Panama and Cuba.
Jose Antonio Oliva Alfonso (Havana, 1965). Self-taught artist. He began his career in 1986. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. Part of his work is in collections of countries like the United States, Mexico, Guadeloupe Islands, Bahamas and Malaysia.
Gabriel Antonio Cuétara de la Campa (Havana, 1991). He graduated in the specialty of Engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro, 2010. He has made several solo and group exhibitions. Some of his pieces are in private collections in the United States and Korea.
Irving Torres Barroso (Cienfuegos, 1979). Self-taught artist. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. Part of his work is in collections of countries like Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, Norway, England, Saudi Arabia, Canada, the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.
Landy Mesis Alvarez (Havana, 1984). Degree in Accounting and Finance, 2014.Member of the ACAA (Cuban Association of Craft Artists). He has made several solo and group exhibitions. His works are exhibited in institutions such as National Museum of Dance, Office of the Historian of Havana and Fayad Jamis bookstore.
Milton Bernal Castro (Havana, 1960).Self-taught painter, designer, journalist.Known as the painter Snuff. Member of the Development Center of Visual Arts of Cuba. His pieces have been exhibited in Cuba, Austria, China, France, Spain, Mexico, Russia, Germany, Hungary and Panama.
Hector Montaner Naranjo (Havana, 1962). Painter, sculptor and goldsmith.Autodidact.Member of the ACAA (Cuban Association of Craft Artists). He has made several solo and group exhibitions in countries like England, Germany, Democratic Republic of Korea, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Chile, Spain, Malaysia and Cuba.
Guillermo Zaldivar Rodriguez (Holguin, 1957). Graduated from the Provincial School of Plastic Arts in Santiago de Cuba, 1976, and the National School of Design as a set designer, 1980. His work is in private collections in Italy, Spain, Belgium, Mexico, United States and Cuba.
Jorge Guanche Garcia (Havana, 1960). Degree in History of Art at the University of Havana, 1992.Member of Artists Cuban Association of Artisans (ACAA) and the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets (FCBC). There are works in private collections in the United States, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, France, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Russia, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, India, China, South Africa, Bahamas, Martinique, Jamaica and Chile.
Sinecio Cuétara Menecia (Pinar del Rio, 1967). He graduated from the School of Plastic Arts of Pinar del Río. Bachelor of Arts Education at the Pedagogical Institute Enrique José Varona, 1991.Painter, venturing into the design and installation. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work is in collections in the United States, Canada, Spain, Mexico, Panama, Portugal, Italy, Chile and Cuba.
Alberto Sautua Fernandez (Havana, 1976). He graduated from the National Academy of Plastic Arts San Alejandro, 1975. Member of the UNEAC, and member of the Taller Experimental de Grafica in Havana and the Cuban Fund of Cultural Assets. His work has been appreciated in Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Belgium, the United States and Cuba.
Enrique Wong Diaz (Villa Clara, 1975). He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro, 1995. Member of the UNEAC. He has made several solo and group exhibitions in countries such as Cuba, France and Malaysia.
Reynaldo Lazaro Alvarez Villamil (Havana, 1962). He graduated from the School of Economics of Marianao. Self-taught artist. He has made several solo and group exhibitions in countries such as Chile and Cuba.
Iskra Ravelo Garcia (Havana, 1985). She graduated from the Academy of San Alejandro Fine Arts with a degree in visual arts at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA). She has made several solo and group exhibitions. His works are in private collections in Cuba and Bahamas.
Ricardo Labarca Lebrigio (Havana, 1987). Graduated from specialty of engraving in the San Alejandro Academy, 2007.Member of the audiovisual cooperative La Manigua. He has made several solo and group exhibitions. His work is part of private collections in countries like Ecuador, Austria, Mexico, Panama and Cuba.
