Celebrating the cultural richness, traditions and diversity of the voices of Cuba and Latin America defined the Havana Film Festival of New York, whose twentieth edition was held from April 9 to 16, although several special events preceded it from April 5 in various spaces in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. The contest, born on the initiative of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, warmly welcomed by The American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba, has become over the years a mandatory point of reference in the colourful New York cultural billboard aiming to present the Latin America cinema with particular focus on the island's cinema.

More than thirty films were shown during those intense days - sixteen of them contestants for the Havana Star Prize – along with exchange sessions with the director of each one or members of his team.

Several special events were part of the program, including tributes to the centennial of Santiago Álvarez, a chronicler of the third world, and the recent demise of filmmaker Rigoberto López. This call also included a small retrospective of the work of renowned filmmaker Fernando Pérez, and the cycle "Happy birthday, Havana!”: a selection of documentaries with the “city of the columns” as the main protagonist.
