- The fire that is inside.
The fire that is inside us and alludes us…The title is a verse from the Venezuelan poet Freddy Ñáñez, aged thirty-eight, and now a member of the cabinet of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
Born in the central neighborhood of Petare, he was taken to live at the Venezuelan border and in San Cristobal founded and directed the literary magazine Sujeto Almado. He also founded the Editorial Nadie nos Edita Editores and was part of the group of puppets Kinimarí. Addtionally, he founded a musical band and from his role as Director of Culture in the state, he stood up for the idea of making the local culture less similar to Caracas’ culture.
After returning to Caracas, he organized, with the Town Hall, major festivals such as the International Theatre Festival. He ran the Foundation for Culture and Arts (Fundarte, acronym) and by the time had published eight books of poems and won several literary awards. He has just arrived in Havana, this time as the Minister of People's Power for Culture.
Arte por Excelencias approaches him in his office to share his main challenges and thoughts as Minister: "What does one do in these circumstances? One must create. That was what José Martí called a key word for a generation. We learned that travelling through Táchira with a Cuban, the writer Imeldo Alvarez. He will always be with us because he taught us to love him. Today we fight for it, so that my son does not go through what happened to me years ago. I learned how to love Bolivar thanks to Chavez, to be proud of my country, because only a revolution of the people could restore memory and identity.”
We are talking about changing concepts: to move from the funding of a decorative art supported by the Fourth Republic to unleash the creative powers of the people. It is true that the state has a constitutional duty to ensure the objective conditions for art and culture to be universal rights, but the best way of doing this is transferring the power to the people so they develop their trades, and therefore increase their economy.
We have new challenges and circumstances, and it is time to walk tighter than ever. We are facing a war of symbols, and we are wanted to be enclosed in those terms. So, more than ever, we defend the heroic imagination of our people.
