Terapia ocupacional en las villas antidrogas / Group therapy with manual craftsmanship
Villa Cocal-Quinqué, Holguín

The Cuban rehabilitation and habit-breaking program has over two decades of experience, with highly-trained specialists. Helping other people come into their own when faced with weakness, has made them thrive for the sake of life

Listening to someone who has gotten over an addition turns out to be comforting. The conversation includes such words as hope, peace and gratitude. If the treatment took place in Cuba, that person will talk about new friends, family support and a group of people that have joined that family: the doctors and specialists that welcomed and treated those patients.
The sensation of being protected and safe will be mentioned, as well as a peace-giving environment or those craftsmanship workshops and group therapies that helped them trust themselves again.
The Cuban rehabilitation and habit-breaking program’s therapeutic arsenal is made up of all those elements. With over two decades of work, besides the support of the country’s Scientific Society in the specialty of Psychiatrics, humanism and the devotion of professionals are its main strength.
Most of those specialists, who are huddled in multidisciplinary teams, have spent years working in a group of villas located in the central and eastern regions of Cuba, nestled in natural environments and organized as “therapeutic communities.”
Based on practical experiences, they have also confirmed the undeniable value of the group coexistence regimen, in which these people that suffer from addiction to alcohol or legal/illegal drugs can talk about their feelings and emotions related to their problem, as well as their fears.
As for the detoxification treatment, the program applies an array of valuable tools, such as meditation, occupational therapy, physical sports, creative activities, or natural and traditional medicine.
Achieving abstinence is not the only goal; it is also about rechanneling the system of individual and social responsibilities, step by step, up to full rehabilitation. Family and close friends play a leading role in the fulfillment of that objective and they even join therapeutic dynamics.
Since the rehabilitation of many of these patients is related to the need to modify their lifestyles or learn how to rise to the occasion; the initial minimum time of the program, some three months, is prolonged to a subsequent period of retraining and monitoring, when the applied therapy is reassessed and ratified, along with family and social reinsertion program.
It is a long way and requires lots of patience, as well as affection and support to the patient. It was perfectly described by a thankful father, whose son had left his addition problem behind: “You don’t heal this disease with a pill, a talk or a check; it takes love, affection and discipline, and I truly 'take my hat off' in front of the Cuban program”.
