“La Terraza” de Cojímar
Restaurant-bar, pride of the Caribbean Sea, results in everybody´s delight, particularly for those who request the drinks of the House: Papa daiquiri and Don Gregorio created to honor Hemingway's most faithful friend.
The sea does not have any port, but the sailor does. But sailors and fishermen in Cojímar, a coastal village found at the east of the Cuban capital, have counted on both, a dependable port always waiting for them and a fascinating bar-restaurant La Terraza (the Terrace). It was right there that the gentle breeze, the splendid panorama of the sea and the warm friendship offered by fishermen and the inhabitants of the charming village of Cojímar were for ever captured. It was also there where the great novelist Ernest Hemingway met Anselmo Hernández, the fisherman who inspired him the celebrated novel The Old Man and the Sea who granted him the Literature Nobel prize. It was Gregorio Fuentes, his close friend and master of his boat Pilar who took him for the first time to Cojímar and then to La Terraza, a site that deeply moved the writer. In his book Islands in the Stream, reference is also made on the place: "Cojímar's bar, built at the edge of the rocks outlooking the port...."The old house, opened in 1925, as a small foodstuff grocery and bar, by Don Manuel García Rodríguez, then located in the oldest street of Cojímar, "La Calzada Real de la Reina Isabel II," was first named as "Las Arecas". Then it was turned into a simple small restaurant, run by subsequent owners until Salvador Blanco took possession, he baptized the place with the present name and led it to the fame with Hemingway's frequent visit to this site. Then the miracle was made, La Terraza, one of the American writer's favorite places, was trapped by his presence, since in every corner he is evoked and expected. Repair works began in 1991 to rescue the place for international tourism in 1993, trying to conserve its original look as faithful as possible, but with a decoration that evokes the novelist, with Hemingway's impressing photos along with his friends and yacht and the Cojímar village as a background. The visitor arrived eagerly looking for the history of the house and the enthusiastic work team made up of 35 workers is ready, thus is recognized by the tourist fair of Madrid (FITUR) which regarded this site as one of the best Cuban restaurants and granted this recognition to La Terraza in 1997 and 1998.
