Between June 20 and 24, 2018, Havana hosted the Segundo Encuentro de Cantoras «Ella y yo» (II Festival of Singers “She and me”) while Matanzas hosted what was called the Primer Encuentro Nacional de la Trova Casa Abierta (First National Festival of Trova Casa Abierta). The first of the two said trovador celebrations was dedicated to the centenary of the well-known traditional “Ella y yo” bolero standard by Oscar Hernández, after which the event is named. The event is also part of the celebrations for the 500 years of the foundation of Havana. Meanwhile, the event in Matanzas paid tribute to the 45th anniversary of the creation of the Nueva Trova movement in the city of Manzanillo.
One of the main achievements of both events is to provide visibility for a large number of trovadores that, throughout the country, continue to hold on to one of our most authentic traditions.
This became clear to the participants in these two songwriters events held between June 20 and 24, 2018: trovadores and/or singer-songwriters who survive in Cuba in times of market economy conditions imposed by the new circumstances.
