Following the road swinging along Sierra Maestra in the heart of the most significant mountain range of Cuba, an oasis is sighted: El Saltón, with its cascades measuring 30 m high, thus forming in its bottom, three natural pools.

This is one of the access doors to the Hero City, Santiago de Cuba, where the Caribbean merges with its mountains and participates in other waterfalls as El Indio, El Negro and La Alcarraza. The natural pools and ponds are very beautiful: Peladero, Turquino, Sevilla

La Gran Piedra (The Big Stone), crowns the mountain bearing the same name, the stone volume measures 70,000 tons, it's a giant crag of volcanic origin which have been registered in the Record Guinnes Book and its ascent consists of going up 400 steps.

Another capricious feature of Nature is found at the Hoya de Bartlett, showing 7,500 m deep; one of the largest uneven geographical depth in the world.

La Gran Piedra, is surrounded by pine trees of numerous varieties, giant ferns and small fruit trees and is located along the cordillera bearing the same name. It has been declared World Biosphere Reserve.

There are 15 protected natural areas with the same classification, among them is a system of caverns that encompasses 47 caves as that of Cueva de los Majáes, the one that registers the highest temperature of the island.

Baconao and Its Mysteries

Baconao Lagoon of fresh and sea waters, the result of the permanent flow of the river and the sea, is one of the exclusive features of Nature in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba and of the river of the same name that feeds the large pond of over 9 km that covers the large lagoon.

A replica of a taíno village is there found, this was the site of old settlers and its surroundings show a large sample of fishes, seabirds, reptiles and ecotourism trails.
