He always showed his preference for the musical bands, this statement was advanced when he was registered in the National School of Art in 1966 where he formed a young orchestra Avance Juvenil that used to play charangas, conducted by his father Enrique Álvarez and then by him from 1974 to 1977, he also developed his musical trend, and it was in 1978 that he formed his famous orchestra, Son 14, which captured the audience with his son numbers in the domestic and international music market.

His first recorded number on a LP was "Con un besito mi amor" (With a little kiss, my love) while "A Bayamo en coche" (Heading to Bayamo on An Open-Air Carriage) was a memorable one in the orchestra's history since it was a landmark in his career.

The “Gentleman of the Son,” an affectionate form of address used by the Venezuelan press, by which his attributes as a renovating performer of the genre are recognized, determined to travel to Havana and form a new orchestra, Adalberto Álvarez and His Son making its debut in 1984, improving over the time and expanding the repertoire, attaining a sound success in the 2000 summer with “Son del Caballero” (The Gentleman's Son).

Adalberto Álvarez, a dreamer, a lover of the family, a paradigm of the music for new generations, has inherited Félix Chapotín's style of playing the son. According to him: “Chapotín's son was virile, strong and I learned to do it that way, listening to the great. His music was expanded by a people of dancers that described him during a period as the “King of the Son”.

Composer, arranger and director, not only his compositions are played in a studio, but in large shows where a wide array of themes exposes the variety of his themes. Over the time, his amazing and vital skill has been revealed, being his most important goal to meet his roots.

The young musicians of the orchestra, follow the tune of a unique way of playing the son, thus becoming stars of the instruments when playing it.
