Pinar del Rio
Like Cinderella, whom magic enables to exhibit her beauty before a prince, Pinar del Río is discovered by the traveler as a Cuba's princess.
The western-most province of Cuba, with an extension of 10,931km2, where a dependable turnpike will take you to Pinar del Río’s capital from Havana in less than two hours. Even on the road, pleasure starts when nature forces to keep you largely looking and admiring Guaniguanico mountains, a world's wonder for its ecological value. The first mountains seen belong to the Sierra del Rosario where the Pan de Guajaibón is located, the tallest one in the western region. The forest of this area covers 25,000 HA and is a Biosphere Reserve. Las Terrazas S. A. resort is a tourist complex located in the very center of the Reserve area where the 4-star Moka Hotel provides services and excursions for hiking and for visiting other tourist areas. Heading west in Sierra del Rosario, Horizontes Soroa Hotel and Villas are found, the surrounding nature is splendid and to that is added a vigorous cascade descending from 20 m high to fall with its transparent waters on Poza del Amor (Love Pool), urging visitors to swim at no fixed schedule. Hiking or horse riding activities allow to watch endemic birds as tocororo (the national bird), the green woodpecker and cartacuba, among others, or the largest orchid garden found in Cuba with 750 species. It is continued by attractive buttes, imposing hills, carved by wonderful valleys as San Vicente, Dos Hermanas and Viñales, the latter is one of the most world-known landscapes declared as National Monument. Near the valley, Los Jazmines Hotel from Horizontes Chain is located, providing an excellent view of the panorama granted by nature. Aguas Claras International Villa is found between Viñales Valley and Pinar del Río city, this facility provides tourists with amenities like horse riding, hiking and peasants’ typical fiestas, ingredients that season the enjoyment of these beautiful spots. To the southeast of the Peninsula, there are 54 immersion spots of the María La Gorda International Dive Center, revealing sea bottoms containing a treasure: the largest black coral population of the archipelago, in addition to underwater caves, worthy of admiration. The sea beauty of the province with the force of its cays can be also compared with that of the countryside. Cayo Levisa is almost virgin, its white beaches cover 3 km of transparent bottoms, secluded spots, gifted with a coral reef fit for diving. Or Cayo Paraíso, surrounded by exquisite beaches that provided a sense of relief to the celebrated writer Ernest Hemingway. A hunting club cannot be missed: "Maspotón," with 61 hunting points in an area of 134 km2 of low lands surrounded by mangrove swamps and coastal lagoons, a shelter of abundant birds, accommodations for the daring hunters can be booked at Horizontes Maspotón Hunting Club. In the city, the best option is to stay at Pinar del Río Hotel and visit the place where the finest cigar of the world is manufactured and see its birth. This cigar is marked by its quality and is backed by the large harvesting culture of this gifted region.
