The city of San Carlos y San Severino de Matanzas was founded on October 12, 1693. Its geographical location and economic development contributed to the excellent intellectual and artistic development that earned it a notorious recognition in society at its time, reaching its peak splendor in the nineteenth century.
Rehabilitation work has been undertaken for a few years now: «a constructive revolution -according to Leonel Pérez Orozco, the city's curator- whose first stage will just finish next October».
It all started with the creation of the City´s Curator Office, thus establishing the managing body that provides methodological organization, regulating and controling all the resources and constructive potential that are used in the restoration. A section of patrimonial public buildings and another section of public spaces, in which the intervention would begin, were prioritized. Among the buildings we may highlight the old La Milagrosa school, currently the Escuela de Oficios, the old Audiencia (Courthouse) of Matanzas, which will definitely house the Curator's Office, the City Model and a Heritage Gallery, where our creators will have the opportunity to present their ideas and residents and visitors will be able to learn about the different stages through which Matanzas has gone through.
