One of the most captivating spots facing nature and historic legends are offered to travelers in the Cuban eastern provinces. There the mythical Sierra Maestra is found where green color is deeper and the color palette filled the senses. Among mountains, the sea and picturesque sites still virgin is the ride we propose, certainly unforgettable. Old cities as Bayamo that much has contributed to the national culture should also be visited.
In the southern part of the country is Granma province, whose fame has been raised on account on nature, the sea and the mountains, This is a vast province where its inhabitants are spread out and the population is mostly rural. Prairies surround Cauto River in this province and the Sierra Maestra mountainous range lodges Pico Turquino, the highest peak of Cuba. There the warm weather of low lands blends with the cold temperatures of the mountains filled with exuberant water springs and vegetation. Bayamo was founded in 1513 by the Spaniard, Adelantado Diego Velázquez. The city has in its historic area, the cathedral of the city, Hymn Square and the House of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the Father of the Homeland, the House of the Trova and other interesting sites. Manzanillo (1784) is the other more important urban center and houses the main port. By a road in good conditions and with a slope that may reach 45 degrees, visitors can reach Santo Domingo village, close to the river. The site is surrounded by flowers and the always present green color. However, the tourist resort par excellence is more to the south, in the area of Pilón village between the sea and the mountains. There two modern hotels are found El Farallón del Caribe with 140 rooms and Marea del Portillo with 130 rooms. Some kilometers away from Pilón is the Hicacos peninsula, over three kilometers of fine sand, a network of hotels will be built to meet the tourist demand in the region for the future. Viramas hunting lodge is located in the northeast region and on the opposite side is El Yarey transit village (14 rooms). In the southeast tip already mentioned, Cabo Cruz Lighthouse can also be seen or El Guafe region where aboriginal vestiges remained. These are sites encompassing archeological interests. To climb Pico Turquino and visit the scenarios of the guerrila war in the Sierra Maestra or those of the 1868 Uprising at La Demajagua between Manzanillo and Campechuela is a tradition followed by several generations of Cuban youngsters and this raises the curiosity of the people coming from different countries. In a near future it may count on 3,200 rooms and complete some other recreation programs as that of water sports. One of the main problems facing the region is that of communication, therefore Sierra Maestra airport of Manzanillo city will be expanded from 2,400 m to 3,000 m. This is the closest airport to the main tourist resorts.
