You get a chance to wallow in the local wildlife, let alone the magnificent beaches and facilities cancun is dotted with.

As something never seen before in Mexico –perhaps in the whole wide world- Cancun, by far the country’s number-one beach destination, has not only managed to cope with adversity in a short span of time, but is also gearing up for a relaunch into the world market as a totally renewed tourist product.

Nearly a year after hurricane Wilma, this travel circuit has recouped its solid hotel infrastructure with over a hundred lodgings and 24,000 rooms –most of them rebuilt from scratch- that complement an assorted array of restaurants, state-of-the-art shopping malls and nightclubs.

This Caribbean destination, nicknamed the Gateway of the Mayan World for its geographical location, has propped up its image with the help of a far-reaching project that has allowed this city to revamp roughly 7.5 miles of shorelines blessed with powder-thin sand that has made it famous for the past three decades.

The Federal Government conducted an unprecedented endeavor in Mexico by earmarking, among other things, a $217-million-peso bailout package to rebuild the beach and give the travel destination its main allure back.

Eleven months after hurricane Wilma pounded this region, Cancun is shining with a light of its own. Now the Kukulcan Avenue –the city’s main street with more than 15 miles that run along the hotel beltway- has been outfitted with a high-tech lighting system that certainly gives a touch of distinction and elegance everywhere you go.

In a bid to rebound from the devastating gusty winds and retouch the lavish foliage that once stood along the avenue, more than 5,000 palm trees hailing from different parts of the country were planted, coupled with 16,000 shrubs that now hem in the hotel zone’s main street.

The joint effort helped rekindle the looks of one of the region’s and the entire nation’s major tourist attractions, giving the location a new value that’s beginning to make the rounds all over the world. Cancun is back on its feet again.

Clearing all hurdles, Cancun –perched on the north of the Quintana Roo state, in southeastern Mexico- has reconnected itself with the rest of all tourist activities visitors have a chance to enjoy there.

Marinas have gotten a new lease on life as well and the traditional boat rides around the coral reefs off Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc are back to normal. And so are the luring tours through mangrove thickets around the Nichupte Lake, one of the destination’s top water reservoirs.

Even though the travel destination leads to some of the most eye-popping archeological sites of the region, like Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza –the latter in neighboring Yucatan state- the El Rey ruins stand tall in the heart of the hotel zone. This is a must-see and you can’t miss it for the world.

Its mild weather conditions have helped the lawn and the deep jungles recover their green hues, making them once again top choices among ecotourists. Don’t miss out on the interesting Spring Trail or forget to swing by the Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Garrafon parks, or the Sianka’an Biosphere Reserve, a string of options for those who love being in touch with nature every step of the way.

No place inside or around Cancun has been left untouched. The beach destination is coming on stronger than ever before as a shopping option, so don’t miss discount sales at La Isla Shopping Village, Kukulcan Plaza, Plaza Caracol, Plaza Flamingo and Forum. Authorities have poured millions of pesos into these malls to make them even better and more service-friendly.

The destination’s gourmet offer has also been overhauled from top to bottom, from traditional food outlets to fancy restaurants serving the finest international cuisine money can buy. They provide the perfect threshold to a night of fun at any of its countless bars and disco clubs that make Cancun’s hot nightlife something to remember for forever more.
