The tourist domain of Gaviota S.A. in eastern Cuba harks back to 1989. The company's initial stock at the time included a small aquarium and a couple of rooms in Bahia Naranjo. Then, Cayo Saetia joined the fledgling pack as a safe haven for hunters that today stands for a paradise showcasing our country's flora and wildlife, plus 19 animal species from other world regions. The key sports twelve comfy rooms and cabanas.

In November 1991, the 222-room Rio de Luna Hotel opened and the Sol Rio de Mares Hotel with 242 accommodations was inaugurated in mid 1995. Three years later, the magnificent five-star 300-room Meliá Rio de Oro Hotel got its big break –currently marketed under the Paradisus brand, the superior trademark of Spanish company Sol Meliá.

Some 20km from Guardalavaca and 15km from Esmeralda Beach, travelers happen on Playa Pesquero, a luring tourist circuit that started out in the business back in September 1999 with the 309-room LTI-Costa Verde Beach Resort, both run and marketed by Germany-based company LTI. In 2001, the 480 rooms of the SuperClubs Breezes Costa Verde began welcoming vacationers.

Other properties owned by the Cuban group are the 51-room Villa Gaviota Santiago spotted in a fancy residential neighborhood in the city of Santiago de Cuba; two hotels and a beach house in Baracoa, Cuba's first-founded city: the 98 accommodations shared among the Porto Santo, El Castillo and Villa Maguana hotels, and an attractive 36-room mountain hotel called Villa Pinares de Mayari right in the heart of eastern Cuba.

The Playa Pesquero Hotel, the island nation's largest resort with a grand total of 944 rooms outfitted with the best conveniences and comfort money can buy, recently opened its doors.

For next year, Gaviota's stock will be engrossed with the addition of the 550-room Club Med Yuraguanal, pretty close to Bahia Naranjo and Playa Pesquero in an exclusive beach area.

By the end of 2002, Gaviota S.A. Oriente had 2,690 rooms under its belt. The company expects to close the year 2003 with as many as 3,200 accommodations in stock.

This white-heat hotel development is supported by a major infrastructure entirely devoted to tourism. Gaviota S.A. also owns the Puerto de Vita International Marina and provides transportation services, car rentals, travel agencies, tourist assistance, all kinds of supplies, restaurants and recreational activities.

In 2003, the leading hotel group in Cuba's northeastern region will celebrate the 15th anniversary of its foundation. Over a dozen years later, the company keeps up a flair to meet the preferences and demands of its international clientele.
