Camagüey city of churches
When Pope Jean Paul II visited Cuba in 1998, he said the most impressing of all the masses held in the island in this city. The items used on that occasion became religious relics preserved by this city as a part of its heritage.
Holy Cathedral of Camagüey Erected on February 2, 1514, a date when also the foundation of the city is commemorated. Fires, pirate attacks and transfers characterized the first centuries until the beginning of the 18th century when the present temple began to be erected.
La Caridad Parish Church It was built as an ancillary church in 1809 by a wealthy couple from Camagüey. The church was reconstructed in 1930-34 similar to a temple found in Argentina, the only remains of the colonial construction are the dome and the sacristy. A place famous for the fairs held every year in the month of September in honor of the Virgin of Charity .
Our Lady of Loneliness. One of the oldest temples of the city whose construction was completed in 1776. Its main facade has kept the great Spanish large door. Perhaps the oldest clock of Cuba was placed on its tower in 1822 since it was built in Barcelona in the year 1773.
Our Lady of Mercy Convent and Church The present temple dates back to 1748, refurbished in 1848 and 1906-09. It has the oldest funerary stonegrave of the city that dates back to 1777. The Holy Tomb is there found which was donated by Manuel Agüero, a wealthy benefactor, when this church joined the Mercy Order.
San Juan de Dios Church and Hospital It existed already in 1686. It was restored in 1986. The image of the Holy Trinity excels in the High Altar, made of fine wood, dating back to 1792 with an anthropomorphic representation of the Holy Spirit
Our Lady of Carmen Church was built in 1825. This is the only city that has two towers and one of the most beautiful facades of all Cuba. Its restoration is being scheduled soon.
