The Ministry of Tourism has been engaged in a development plan of nature tourism that will make that the 5% of the travelers who visit Cuba will do it under this modality. In a first moment, the prioritized areas will be Viñales and Sierra de Zapata in the province of Pinar del Río in western Cuba; the Zapata Peninsula in Matanzas, toward the center; the Escambray mountains which cover the territories of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara and Sancti Spíritus and a little further, the Sierra Maestra and the settlement of Baracoa, in Guantánamo in eastern Cuba. This project is to be very successful since Cuba has over 4,000 cays and islets, 6,370 botanical species-about 3,180 are endemic-and also exhibits a very varied fauna.
Aimed at preserving the gifts of nature in the Cuban environment and at contributing that this world continues being called the Blue Planet, the largest of the Antilles develops a protection policy and thus has declared 424 protected areas.
And, undoubtedly, this is an island blessed by a splendid nature.
